Transformation of an Organization Climate Action Plan
into a Sustainability Plan

In this article, our Dr. Clinton discusses a research project where she created two new software tools:

  • a framework for defining customized comprehensive sustainability objectives across the full spectrum of environmental, economic and social impacts of an organization; and
  • a prioritization tool for selecting actions that will have optimal results.

Application of these tools to one subset of organization climate action plan mitigations showed,
for a slightly lower capital outlay compared to the previous action set that was based on carbon footprint alone:

  • net present value increased by nearly 400 times, from around $5000 to nearly $2million,
  • simple payback reduced from 9 years to 2 years for the full set of actions
  • Simple ROI 65%; 10-yr discounted ROI 3.67,
  • more than 5 times the green house gas reduction (in Metric tonnes of CO2-equivalents), and
  • more than 5 times the water savings.

While the project involved application to a university setting, the robust tools can be used for any organization.
